The blunderbuss is a muzzle-loading firearm with a flared, trumpet-like barrel, and is the predecessor to the shotgun. The name is of Dutch origin, and means "Thunder gun" or "Thunder tube". The blunderbuss is a mid-sized firearm, smaller than most rifles, but larger than the pistol. While it has a butt like a rifle it was intended to be fired from the hip. It was commonly filled with birdshot and used to do maximum damage to enemies in a room.
